Auckland police returned an envelope of cash to the Head Hunters West motorcycle gang after mistakenly interpreting its label as "drugs profit" during an August raid.
Upon closer inspection, the handwritten label actually read "drags profit," referencing proceeds from motorcycle racing events at Meremere Dragway in northern Waikato, NewsTalkZB reported.
The mix-up occurred during a search for a stolen motorcycle at the gang's Henderson clubhouse. While the bike wasn't found, police seized several items, including a semi-automatic pistol, motorcycles, and the envelope of cash.
"Police have since clarified the handwriting on the envelope contained an 'a' instead of a 'u,'" a spokesperson confirmed. "The money has since been returned."
The raid marked one of several recent police operations targeting the Head Hunters West chapter.
In November, after the new Gangs Act 2024 came into effect, multiple members were arrested for displaying gang insignia, with over 40 charges filed under the new law.
