After a concerned family member called Florida police about a relative possibly being suicidal, police ended up killing the man after they said he pointed the gun at them.
Officers responded to a home in Tampa after receiving a call from a worried relative, who said they heard gunfire in the bathroom and was worried the man had taken his own life, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies discovered Anthony Dadante, 67, alive and in the bathtub, but he reportedly had blood on his chest and a gun in his hand. The two officers told Dadante to drop the weapon multiple times, but shot him after the 67-year-old allegedly pointed the gun at them.
Dadante died as a result of his injuries.
"What began as a response to a potential suicide changed into a life-threatening confrontation that no deputy ever wants to face," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. "Our deputies had to make a tough decision in an instant, and it was the right one."
Neither of the responding deputies had a history with use of force, and Dadante did not have a criminal record, according to the sheriff's office.
The Florida Deportment of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
