‘Community’ Season 6 And Movie Rumors: Hulu ‘Abandons’ Pick-Up Talks; Could Netflix Or Amazon Be Interested?

"Community" fans hopeful for the hashtag #sixseasonsandamovie to become a reality are bummed following a report that claims Hulu has "abandoned talks to acquire the cult comedy." The NBC show starring Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudo, Yvette Nicole Brown and Alison Brie was cancelled by the network as it failed to gain any substantial traction over its five season run. The comedy created by Dan Harmon had always been "on the bubble" but always seemed to be saved at the last minute thanks to a fervent fan base that made a lot of noise in social media, but did not translate into viewers on television.

Sony Pictures Television, the studio that owns the series, had been pitching the series to multiple networks and the Hulu streaming service. The contract for the actors involved in the sitcom expires on June 30, so a deal has to be struck before then if not it'll be doomsday for the Greendale students. “Sony does not give up easily,” a source told TVLine that hinted that another service or network could still pick up the series. “A lot can happen in one week.” Could that be Netflix or Amazon? Netflix brought back "Arrested Development" from the dead years later after the FOX cancellation for a fourth season, but early talks with the straming service quickly fell through. Amazon has been serious about series productions lately and having a semi-known staple to launch other shows might be a good deal for them.

Harmon seemed a little reluctant and ready to move on following the news of the cancellation, but was ok with Sony pursuing another home for the cult hit. “I will confess, however, that when Sony called me on Friday with the news, there was brief discussion at the end of the call about the concept of the show living elsewhere, and I was definitely in the ‘eh’ column,” he wrote. “But it doesn’t matter right now WHY I’d be lukewarm or if my reasons would be valid, what matters is, I won’t be lukewarm. I’ll heat up. I said ‘eh’ on a Friday afternoon, I will change it to a “sure, let’s talk” on Monday morning and Sony can do their thing. I’m not going to be the guy that recancels canceled Community.”
