LOS ANGELES -- After six weeks of close games that came down to the final play, the USC Trojans needed a big statement win over the Pac-12 doormat, Colorado. They got exactly that on Saturday as the men of troy routed the Buffaloes 56-28 in front of 74,756 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Junior, Cody Kessler, proved why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the country as he threw for a school record seven touchdowns. The previous record of six touchdowns was set by Kessler’s predecessor, Matt Barkley, just two years earlier.
Kessler set the record (which can be seen in the video below) with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Kessler found Steven Mitchell in the back of the end zone and Mitchell made a sensational diving catch to give Kessler the record (and Mitchell’s first career touchdown). Steve Sarkisian removed most of his starters after the series, ending Kessler’s chances of increasing the record.
All-American receiver, Nelson Agholor, was spectacular for the Trojans once again, catching 6 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Kessler and Agholor hooked up for the play of the day when Kessler found his star receiver wide open over the middle which Agholor took to the house for a 75-yard touchdown.
Kessler finished the game with 319 yards passing in just under three quarters of play. Javorius “Buck” Allen who has been dominant for USC on the season, had his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season as he went for 128 yards and one touchdown on the day.
USC’s win should improve their national ranking of 22nd coming into the week, and they will remain in first place in the Pac-12 South with a 4-1 conference record. They are now 5-2 overall. The Trojans will face a touch test next week when they travel to Salt Lake City to take on #20 Utah for first place in the Pac-12 South.
