Seven people are dead, including the suspected gunman, after a "senseless act of violence" erupted at a birthday party in Colorado Springs on Saturday evening.
The Colorado Springs Police Department reported that the suspect was the boyfriend of one of the female attendees of the party. He allegedly stormed the venue and opened fire on the group, killing six people and injuring a few others.
The gunman then reportedly proceeded to shoot himself. It remains unknown whether the suspect's girlfriend is among the confirmed dead.
At approximately 12:18 a.m. early Sunday morning, officers responded to a report of a shooting at the 2800 block of Preakness Way in Canterbury Mobile Home Park, a manufactured home community along South Powers Boulevard.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers found six lifeless bodies and one adult male, who sustained serious injuries from the attack. According to 9News, the man was rushed to a nearby local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Friends, family, and children were gathered inside the trailer when the shots were fired. Police noted that the children were left unscathed and are now in the care of relatives.
In a statement, Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski addressed the community and the families of the victims, noting that the authorities will do everything they can to investigate the incident. He said unwavering support will be given by the police department to the bereaved families, Fox News reported.
"This is something you hope never happens in your own community, in the place that you call home. When these types of unspeakable acts happen, there is nothing that can be done to fully rebuild what was lost or replace those who are no longer with us," his statement read.
Devastated by the news of another shooting tragedy, Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers called out the "senseless act of violence."
"Today we find ourselves mourning the loss of lives and praying solemnly for those who were injured and those who lost family members in a senseless act of violence on Sunday morning," he said.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis also took to social media to describe the incident as "devastating," noting the day was supposed to honor amazing female carers and mothers around the world. He offered his condolences and prayers to the victims, their families, and the Colorado Springs community, as they mourn the lives lost to the tragedy.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office is set to release the identifications of the victims as well as their official cause and manner of death. Investigations are underway, with the motive behind the attack yet to be determined.
According to the Associated Press, the recent shooting incident was Colorado’s worst mass shooting since 10 people were slain at a Boulder supermarket on March 22.
Colorado Springs, Colorado's second-biggest city after Denver with a population of 465,000, saw three people shot dead during a random shootout in November 2015. The gunman died following an encounter with the police.
Less than a month later, a police officer and two more civilians were killed by an indiscriminate shooter, leaving eight others injured in a shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic.
