Chobani, the Greek yogurt manufacturer, has pulled some of its products off the shelves after receiving complaints from multiple consumers that the yougurt tasted "old." The company said, however, that its withdrawal of the products is not an actual recall, but isolated quality concerns. It does not appear that any of the yogurt contained contiminants that could pose as health risks, but certain yogurts cups had a "sharp aftertaste," were "unnervingly fizzy" and its strawberry flavor was reported to taste "like wine." Some have reported that the sour, sometimes foul-smelling cups have caused them to become ill. Chobani posted to its Facebook page a statement on the withdrawal, noting that it is asking retailers to take the offendings products off its shelves. "Here at Chobani, nothing is more important to us than the quality of our products and the safety and satisfaction of our customers. Recently, we heard quality concerns surrounding certain cups, which were experiencing swelling or bloating," the statement read.
The products in question appear to have contained a type of mold commonly found in dairy products. According to the company, only 5 percent of its products were affected by the mold, and most of them were linked to its Idaho facility. The funny-tasting yogurts cups bear the code 16-012 and have expiration dates between Sept. 11, 2013 and Oct. 7, 2013. Food experts say this issue is not a recall as there is a small likelihood that the products could cause harm to consumers. Those who have purchased potentially spoiled products, which may fizz out of the top of the container or its packaging appears bloated, are asked to contact Chobani at care@chobani.com. "We've been diligently working with our retail partners and have voluntarily and proactively removed and replaced the majority of potentially affected cups. . . We have not issued a recall, but rather are working closing with select retailers to replace product that does not meet our rigid quality standards," read the company's statement.
