NEW YORK CITY -- "Sin Querer Queriendo" is among the most memorable phrases in Latin American TV. It was popularized by Roberto Gomez Bolaños, best known as Chespirito, who created and played emblematic characters like El Chavo del 8 and El Chapulin Colorado. The phrase will now also be the title of an upcoming bio series on Max (formerly HBO), which will follow the life of the iconic Mexican actor.
The series will be produced by Max in collaboration with Warner Bros, Discovery and THR3 Media Group, as well as Roberto Gomez Fernandez, son of the late actor.
"My dad was a small man with a big heart," Gomez Fernandez said last year when the show was originally announced. "And so we have the task of showing the world a talented human being who, at the same time, was a father, a husband, a friend and a brother."
Though not much has been revealed about the show since its initial announcement, Max Latinoamerica just provided the first look at the upcoming project.
Gomez Bolaños will be played by Mexican actor Pablo Cruz, who has been involved in other major series like Netflix's "Luis Miguel: The Series" and the Mexican anthology drama "La Rosa de Guadalupe."
Along with the casting announcement, the streaming platform also revealed two promotional images. In the first one, Cruz is seen looking hopefully to the sky, wearing Chespirito's quintessential El Chavo del 8 costume of the striped shirt and checkered cap with visor and earmuffs. In the second image, he is seemingly whistling at an empty birdcage wearing a brown suit.
"Sin Querer Queriendo" is the first product to come from the upcoming Chespirito Media Universe, as announced by Grupo Chespirito, the company created by the late actor and his son. The universe is expected to produce different media content based on the characters from the actor, including TV shows, animations, movies and other family-focused content.
"It is a project that my father only imagined in dreams," said Roberto Gomez Fernandez, adding that the Chespirito Media Universe would preserve his father's legacy "in the hearts of the people" for many more generations to come.
The series' production started back in 2023. Besides Cruz's casting announcement, there are no further details on the rest of characters or actors who will appear in the show including Don Ramo, Kiko, la Chilindrina or el Profesor Jirafales. A release date has also not been announced so far.
