Chelsea fans across the globe have reason to celebrate today as their club finally landed the big fish they had been hoping for. Chelsea has completed the transfer with Atletico Madrid to send star Diego Costa to the English squad. The Latin Times has just heard that Costa has inked his new five-year contract with the club after arriving in the English town earlier this morning.
The terms of the five-year deal have not been made official yet, but we do know that the London based club forked over $52 million to complete the transfer. Costa was amazing with Atletico last year, scoring 36 goals in all competitions and helping Atletico to their first La Liga title in more than 18 years. He led his team all the way to the EUFA Champions league final where Atletico was just seconds away from victory before conceding a game tying goal to Sergio Ramos in stoppage time. Real Madrid went on to win in extra time.
Costa posted an official message to the London fans after arriving:
“I am very happy to sign for Chelsea. Everybody knows it is a big club in a very competitive league, and I am very excited to get started in England with a fantastic coach and teammates. Having played against Chelsea last season I know the high quality of the squad I am joining.” He said in a statement.
“I would like to thank everybody at Atletico who made me into the player I am, it was an incredible time for me, but now I am starting a new adventure and I hope to win many trophies with Chelsea.”
Costa underperformed with Spain at the World Cup this year, but will look to repeat the excellent season he had at Atletico while competing with Spanish national teammate Fernando Torres for the starting strike spot at Chelsea this year.
