It's no secret that many coaches in collegiate and professional sports earn themselves a significant amount of money based on their team's performance.
For example, the University of Alabama football program and outstanding head coach Nick Saban won their third National Championship in four seasons with a complete dismantling of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish back on January 7, 2013.

Rewarded for the continued success of the program, Saban earned over $5 million last season, a salary that may be steep in the eyes of many but it's a figure the 61-year-old coach certainly deserves and earned on his own, reconstructing Alabama football into the powerhouse it was when the legendary Paul 'Bear' Bryant was roving the sidelines from 1958 to 1983.
While most athletic programs - and nearly every job in the workforce - pay their employees based on performance, the University of Notre Dame is currently paying a former head coach millions of dollars despite his struggles in rebuilding a downtrodden football program.
As ESPN reports, former head football coach Charlie Weis made $2,054,744 from the University last year, a figure larger than the $1,088,179 current head coach Brian Kelly earned in 2012.

Weis was relieved of his duties from the Irish football program after posting a 3-9 record in 2007, a 7-6 tally in 2008 and a 6-6 mark in 2009, never living up to the expectations the school had for the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator when they hired him before the start of the 2005 season.
Although the 57-year-old Trenton, New Jersey native did guide UND to back-to-back BCS bowl appearances during his first 2 campaigns, the team endured a significant drop in production the next 3 seasons as Weis was never able to establish any balance between his usually strong offense and consistently porous defense.
The current head football coach at the University of Kansas, Weis has been receiving payment as part of his buyout agreement with the University since 2009 and as the USA Today reports, the head coach has totaled nearly $10.8 million in termination reimbursement through 2011.
Notre Dame is schedule for annual payments with Weis through December of 2015 and it is reported that the total amount of money paid to their former leader will be well over $18 million, a high price to pay for someone who hasn't graced the side in over 3 seasons.

In addition to out-earning Brian Kelly last season, Charlie Weis also took home more from Notre Dame then current athletic director Jack Swarbrick did in 2012, with the A.D. making $1,085,260.
Although the University will continue to pay their former head coach, the Irish football program seems to be back on track following a phenomenal 2012-2013 campaign.
Notre Dame finished the regular season a perfect 12-0, earning themselves the nation's No. 1 ranking and a berth in the BCS National Championship Game.
Despite a 42-14 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, fans of the Fighting Irish should be more than pleased with the state of the team as the Irish are once again expected to be in National Title contention when their season begins on August 31 with a home game against Temple.
