Boxer Canelo Alvarez, 32, beat his fierce rival Gennady Golovkin in their trilogy bout in Las Vegas on Saturday, and immediately after the win he said that he will need a surgery on his left hand.
The Mexican star delivered a comprehensive pummeling of Golovkin, 40, in the first eight rounds, reported Daily Mail. After the victory, Alvarez paid his respect to his once sparring partner. He also revealed that he was dealing with a significant injury throughout the bout.
Alvarez said in his post-fight interview that Golovkin is a "tough fighter, but I’m glad I won." He shared that he needs surgery on his left hand, but he is "good, I’m a warrior and that is why I’m here." When asked how much the injury impacted him during the fight, he said a lot, and he "can’t hold a glass. It is really bad."
According to MARCA, after the surgery, he could be out of training for about six weeks. He shared that the discomfort in his hand came from the fight against Caleb Plant apart from the fight with Golovkin. Alvarez said that since his bout with Plant, he had the injury, but because of "carelessness you let time pass, you think that nothing is going to happen. But there's the result, I don't like to lose."
He noted that he will need the surgery before seeking a possible rematch with Dmitry Bivol. According to Reuters, Bivol inflicted the second of only two losses on Alvarez's 62-fight resume when the two boxers faced each other in May. On Nov. 5, Bivol will take on Gilberto Ramirez in a light heavyweight title fight in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Alvarez is keen to step up a weight class to take on Bivol again. But the super middleweight champion wants to ensure that he has recovered fully from his encounter with Golovkin before finalizing a second fight with Bivol.
Alvarez said that he has gone through some difficult things in his life and the only thing "you can do is try to continue and move forward."
Bivol became the only fighter other than Floyd Mayweather Junior to defeat Alvarez. This happened when he won a unanimous decision over the Mexican boxer when they clashed for the World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight title.
On Saturday, Alvarez comfortably defeated Golovkin for the second time in their three fights. Now, he has his sights set on revenge against Bivol. He said that he needs to come back and get strength in his hand, recover his hand and his body so that he "can come back stronger than ever." According to him, it's very important for his legacy, for him, his pride, his country, his family and for everything. He stressed that it's very important and "I will beat him."
