Caleb Plant plans to pick up the pieces since suffering his first loss to Mexican Canelo Alvarez last year. The 29-year-old lost via TKO in the 11th round at the MGM Grand Arena in Nevada, losing the IBF super-middleweight title in the process.
But as far as Plant is concerned, the scores before the stoppage is worth considering.
Jude Patricia Morse Jarman had it 96-94, in favor of Alvarez. While Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld had it 97-93 and 98-92 respectively, also in Alvarez’s favor.
It appears Plant feels he had a chance and can do more if he would be given the chance to face the Mexican brawler once more. But for that to happen, the American pug knows he has to work his way back up to be considered.
“I want my rematch with Canelo,” said Plant on Thaboxingvoice. “If I need to beat every other top super middleweight in the division to get my rematch then that’s what I’m willing to do.”
Plant and company are doing just that. They are reportedly now in talks with the side of Anthony Dirrell. Nothing has been sealed but the belief is that Plant and Dirrell could be clashing in the coming months.
But assuming it does go down, that may not be enough. Plant has been around long enough to know that one win won’t give him a shot at Alvarez. Hence, he will need to face other big-name fighters such as David Benavidez.
And it appears Plant has no problem with that. He says that Benavidez is someone that is on his list and someone he has been longing to face.
“That’s a fight that I want and that’s a fight that I been wanting,” the 29-year-old former IBF champion said.
