A Canadian man was arrested after he reportedly shot and killed an officer in Tulum, Mexico on Monday, Oct. 31.
Officers in Tulum reportedly responded to a report of a man firing at a car in the community of Francisco Hu May in Tulum, Mexico on Monday, Oct. 31. When officers arrived at the scene, a man, identified later as Patrick C, opened fire at them. One officer was shot and subsequently died of his wounds, Mexico News Daily reported.
After shooting at the officers, Patrick then entered his home and set it on fire before exiting. Seeing him exit the house, officers then fired at the suspect. The suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his leg before he was finally detained and subsequently taken to a hospital in Playa del Carmen, where he remains in police custody.
Following the shooting, Quintana Roo’s state security agency confirmed the police officer’s death.
Meanwhile, the state Attorney General’s Office (FGE) said in a statement on Tuesday, Nov. 1 that Patrick C was detained due to his “probable participation in the crime of homicide” in the community of Francisco Uh May on Monday, ABC News reported.
Francisco Uh May is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Tulum and is about the same distance southeast of the Cobá archaeological site.
Information regarding how long the alleged shooter had been living in the Mayan community is unclear. The community is described on a vacation rental site as “a small but unique village that is known for arts and crafts.”
In a similar but unrelated incident, an inmate at Riker’s Island stabbed a corrections officer 15 times in an unprovoked attack at 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31 inside the Anna M. Kross Center, as previously reported.
The officer was working at the Anna M. Kross Center protective custody unit when Dennis Applewhite ambushed the unnamed officer and brutally stabbed him 15 times in the back of his head. According to the New York City Department of Corrections, the assault left the officer with serious injuries, and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. He is said to be in stable condition.
Applewhite has been behind bars while awaiting trial on charges of murdering his girlfriend, Brittani Duffy, 27, who was also three months pregnant at the time in her apartment in November last year. Duffy died from a gunshot to her neck. Applewhite has now been re-arrested as the DOC investigates the attack further.
