As Bugatti winds down Veyron production, the French supercar brand confirms the development of a radical all-new Veyron successor.
While a number of automakers are pushing the supercar envelope with cutting edge high performance hybrid powertrains, Bugatti aims to showcase its engineering prowess with a different approach-- a 1,600-hp approach.
The current range-topping 1,200-hp Veyron Super Sport is capable of 0-to-60 mph acceleration in just 2.5 seconds as well as a top speed of 267 mph. As alien as these numbers may seem, Bugatti claims that the successor will be capable of an utterly incomprehensible 0-to-62 mph in just 1.8 seconds as well as a top speed that dangerously approaches 300 mph.
According to Bugatti, the next supercar will produce approximately 1,600-hp and will be 250 kg lighter than the current model. Chief vehicle engineer Jens Schulenburg says, "We are working on the next super-sports car. The big challenge will be reducing weight - we are looking at some incredible technologies, such as wheels made entirely from carbon fibre. We're considering hybrids, too."
A 290 mph+ hybrid supercar is certainly groundbreaking, but the centerpiece in the upcoming Bugatti will remain its signature quad-turbo W16 engine, which will gain an increase in displacement from 8.0 to 9.6 liters to allow even greater potential output.
The upcoming Bugatti is scheduled for a public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013. Of course, Bugatti has not mentioned fuel efficiency figures.
