Britney Spears is under fire from the Latino community after she made comments that could be construed as racist. In an interview with Univision's "Despierta America," Spears said "I think it's very sexy. I've always liked Latino men. They make me think of a bad-boy type that your father wouldn't let you go out with." The comment reinforces exactly the kind of stereotype that Latinos have fought against. The singer was then asked if she spoke Spanish, to which the "Stronger" singer replied with high-pitched gobbledygook.
Britney Spears' comments have riled Latino fans. While it is likely there was little malicious intent behind Spears' careless responses, they nonetheless suggest a level of ignorance from the American singer who has a great deal of Latino followers. Moreover, her fake Spanish is frankly insulting, particularly given that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States. The singer also apopted a very poor Latino accent when replying to Luis Sandoval's question of "Who's your perfect man?" with "Just talk like you."
Fans were not the only ones to react to Spears' comments. Blogger Perez Hilton called Spears an "accidental racist," saying, "We realize the hot-blooded Latino male is a super prevalent stereotype, but you can't judge people based on their ethnicity!"
