A British tourist with a residence in Thailand was killed and his friend left heavily injured on Saturday, Jan. 22, after a Thai local neighbor who lived next door to the two reportedly attacked the duo with a sickle later found on the scene.
Forty-nine-year-old Marcus Evans, who was visiting his Thai girlfriend Melanie Derrick at her home in the town of Kanchanaburi, was found dead next to a pool of blood with what is being said are stab wounds in the neck, near a bench in the house, according to the Bangkok Post.
Also found at the scene was 55-year-old Shaun Dagnan, who was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, as well as a bloody sickle which police officers in the area believe was used in the attack against Evans and Dagnan, the Daily Beast reported.
Evans and Dagnan were reportedly drinking together on the night of the violent incident. Adria Licci, who was a friend of the victim, said that the 23-year-old neighbor of the two visited them well after midnight and attacked the two.
The neighbor, whom Licci said used to joke around with the two victims, was reportedly annoyed by the loud music they were playing. He was later found hiding in the property of a relative and was subsequently arrested. The assailant’s name has yet to be released to the press, according to BBC News.
“We are in contact with the Royal Thai Police following the death of one British man and the [hospitalization] of another in Thailand and are ready to provide consular support,” the U.K. Foreign Office in the country said.
Evans was reportedly born in the English county of Somerset while Dagnan resided in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
In a Facebook post, Evans’ girlfriend Derrick, with whom he had two children with, expressed sorrow online regarding the death of her boyfriend: “And just like that another person I loved dearly… Gone xxx.”
