A police dog was stabbed multiple times in the head while subduing an armed attacker who broke an officer's wrist.
On Sunday, May 30, Kaiser and his handler, PC Mark Woolcott, were night patrolling in South London when they were alerted about an intruder at a home in Orpington.
The duo along with other officers from the Metropolitan Police responded to the residence and searched the area.
Brave Kaiser located a man down a track behind the house and lunged at him. During his attempts to subdue the suspect, Kaiser was stabbed five times in the head and once below the eye.
Despite being seriously injured, he continued to attack the suspect and managed to hold him until officers handcuffed him.
"[Kaiser] was rushed to the vets where thankfully the blows to the top of his head were found to have struck bone, narrowly avoiding lasting injury, or worse," the Met said in a statement.
"He required stitches and was kept in overnight for observation but is expected to make a full recovery."
An officer was also injured during the Sunday night attack. His name was not released.
"In the struggle that followed the attack on Kaiser, another officer sustained a broken wrist and is expected to be off work for up to a month," the statement said.
According to the force, the 43-year-old suspect suffers from severe mental health issues.
The unnamed suspect, armed with a large kitchen knife, had left his house in Biggin Hill earlier the same evening.
His family had reported him missing and a search was initiated but he was not immediately found.
He is believed to have used a golf club to smash the window of a car before fleeing into the nearby fields.
Following Sunday's incident, he was detained under the Mental Health Act and is currently receiving treatment at an appropriate facility.
"I want to pay tribute to Kaiser and PC Woolcott for the immense bravery they showed in tackling this armed man. Kaiser was stabbed multiple times in the head and is lucky to be alive," Superintendent Emma Richards, from the Met's Taskforce, which includes the Dog Support Unit, said.
"My thoughts are also with the officer who sustained a broken wrist. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on duty as soon as he is able," she added.
