A box containing human heads was stolen out of a parked freight company truck used to transport body parts for medical research, authorities said Saturday, March 5.
According to the Denver police, someone broke into the box truck at around 11 a.m. Thursday morning, while it was parked near 23rd Avenue in the city's Central Park neighborhood.
Investigators said the unidentified suspect/suspects broke into the truck and took a dolly and a blue-and-white box, about 20 x 15 x 18 inches in size, marked with a label that said "Exempt Human Specimen".
The box was being transported for medical research purposes. The contents in the box were in the custody of Science Care, a body and body parts donation used to help improve scientific research and education, authorities said.
The police have not released any further details of the incident because the case is still active.
"Well, my wife actually does Ph.D. research at the University of Colorado Anschutz," Isaac Fields, a local resident, told Denver television station KDVR.
"So cadavers are definitely utilized in certain situations. And I’m assuming that was probably the case."
No arrests had been made as of Saturday. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the police.
"Pretty shocking. I guess I don’t see too many strange things happening around here usually, but you know you never know," Fields told the local news station.
"Wow! I would have been so terrified," he added.
In another gruesome incident, a 24-year-old Wisconsin woman allegedly dismembered her lover during a drug-fueled sex session and then told police they were "going to have fun trying to find all of the organs," authorities said.
At about 3:25 am on Feb 23, Green Bay Police Officer Alex Wanish was dispatched to a home on Stony Brook Lane in Brown County after a woman called in reporting about finding her son’s severed head in a bucket.
The officer arrived at the home, where he was allowed inside by a woman, identified as Tara Pakanich, who told him that she made the shocking discovery in their basement after being awakened by the sound of a slamming door and a vehicle driving away.
Officer Wanish made his way down the basement stairs, and found a black plastic bucket on the ground with a shower beach towel over it.
He removed the towel to find the severed head of 24-year-old, Shad Rock Thyrion.
The investigators learned Thyrion was last seen with a woman, identified as Taylor Schabusiness.
It didn't take long for police to catch up to Schabusiness. She was found outside her home with blood still on her clothes, scratches on her arms, a cut on her left thumb, and blood on her hands, according to the complaint.
When police asked her what had happened, Schabusiness replied, "That is a good question".
Officers then searched her van and found a crockpot box in the rear passenger seat containing human body parts, "including legs".
Schabusiness who has a husband, Warren, and recently became a mother to son, Mateo, admitted that she knew Thyrion and claimed that they had been doing drugs – including Trazadone, a powerful sedative, earlier in the day.
She told detectives how she sat on top of Thyrion during a bondage sex session and went 'crazy' strangling him after he put the chain — which she compared to a dog choke collar — around his neck.
Once she realized he was dead, Schabusiness stated that she 'played' with Thyrion’s body before decapitating and dismembering him with knives taken from his mother's kitchen.
Thyrion's penis was found in the same bucket as his head while his other body parts were found in several bags in the basement.
His upper torso and several internal organs were found in a storage tote along with a carving knife. His legs and other body parts were found in her minivan.
Schabusiness told detectives that she had planned to take all the body parts with her but that she had 'got lazy' and was not prepared for the 'unplanned' murder.
She was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and third-degree sexual assault.
She remains in custody after a bond hearing in Brown County Court Tuesday, March 1, during which her bail was set at $2million. She may face life in prison if convicted.
