“Boardwalk Empire” is set to return to HBO for its fifth and final season on September 7, and with only a few episodes left to finish the story of Nucky Thompson the premiere episode “Golden Days for Boys and Girls” is set to be one to remember. “Boardwalk Empire” is coming to an end on HBO, but the main theme of the series, prohibition, will be coming to its historic end on the series, with crime boss and elected Atlantic City treasurer, Enoch Malachi “Nucky” Thompson navigating the legalization of alcohol and the subsequent fall of his illegal crime fuelled empire.
When fans last saw Nucky in Season 4, his personal, political and gangster life were falling apart at the seams, FBI agent Warren Knox is completely and utterly focused on destroying Nucky’s criminal empire, the trouble gets all the worse when he sends his butler and close confidante, Eddie Kessler to deliver money to Ralph Capone in Penn Station. The meet up is a sting and Knox threatens Eddie with serious blackmail in an attempt to get him to turn on his employer. Eddie, though loyal, is left in a precarious situation and decides the best course of action is to commit suicide, this act devastates Nucky. The next issue to be dealt with in Season 4 was the now murderer Willie, the nephew of Nucky and son of Eli. During a prank at Temple University, Willie inadvertently murdered a classmate, terrified he called his uncle, who quickly cleaned up the issue, framing the murder on Willie’s roommate, Clayton.
However, the relentless Knox discovers the truth and blackmails Eli into informing on his brother, in exchange for keeping his son out of jail. Eli will not sacrifice his son, so left with no choice, he become Knox’s informant. In the conclusion of the season, Eli sets up a meeting for his brother and Masseria where the two bootleggers will eventually be arrested by Knox. However, Nucky begins to suspect his brother and decides to cancel the meeting, his sole desire now to abandon his empire and Atlantic City and flee to Cub with his girlfriend Sally. He first must meet with Eli, in a tense moment Nucky pulls a gun on Eli and threatens his brother, however when his nephew Willie unexpectedly enters, Nucky cannot bring himself to kill his brother. To save both his brother and his son, Eli makes a drastic move at the end of Season 4 and kills Knox, now all Nucky’s plans of leaving Atlantic City are behind him and he plans to help his brother escape.
In the premiere episode, fans will pick up 7 years in the future, and discover the aftermath of Eli’s murder of Knox, his subsequent escape, and even the escape of Nucky. The synopsis for “Golden Day for Girls and Boys” reveals that despite initially forsaking plans to flee for Cuba, Nucky has finally made it to the island. Fans will pick back up with Nucky while he is in Cuba, and while the time jump will be I full effect, fans should expect to learn more about Nucky’s childhood. The synopsis reveals that Nucky is reminiscing about his upbringing, while simultaneously working on a plan to bring prohibition to an end in America.
