If you have been looking for a new TV show, especially with the winding down of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” than Cinemax has just read your mind. Cinemax’s new series “The Knick,” directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen is a period piece to rival any other historic drama, the series takes a look at both the professional work and personal lives of medical professionals at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The series operates under the tagline “modern medicine had to start somewhere” and while the procedures performed in the series are far from modern, for the 1900’s the techniques they use are innovative.
Clive Owen plays John W. Thackery, who serves as the chief surgeon at the Knickerbocker hospital and despite battling serious cocaine and opium addictions, is one of the leading minds in medical and surgical techniques. Joining Thackery at the hospital, is Dr. Algernon Edwards, a Harvard graduate who as an African American surgeon must assert his worth in the racially charged NYC and all-white hospital staff. Another issue occurring with “The Knick” is the hospital’s desperate financial situation, according to the series synopsis, the hospital is struggling to keep the lights on and must attempt to attract a wealthy clientele, without sacrificing quality care.
“The Knick” premiered on Cinemax on August 8, and if you weren’t one of the 1.7 million viewers watching, then I have a surprise for you. Lucky for you, you can watch the first episode of “The Knick” online for free! Quick warning, this series is not for the faint of heart, within the first 10 minutes there are approximately 3 gruesome deaths, so while I completely encourage to watch and enjoy “The Knick,” you should plan on encountering some blood and gore of the “Game of Thrones” variety while viewing.
