A Thai-Indian billionaire couple has died under mysterious circumstances in a suspected drowning incident on Koh Tao Island off the Surat Thani province coast on Friday afternoon.

According to the couple's son Ratich, 43, he left his parents Rakeshwar Sachathamakul, 59, and wife Anshoo, 55, relaxing by the pool and went for a stroll along Shark Bay beach on June 4 afternoon.

When he returned to the hotel, he stumbled upon the grim discovery of both his parents unresponsive at the bottom of the Jamahkiri Resort & Spa swimming pool.

The Sachathamakul son immediately alerted hotel staff, who in turn contacted police for assistance. The hotel staff then dived into the pool to retrieve the bodies and bring them to the surface, The Thaiger reported.

Officials from the Koh Tao Police Station, along with medical officers from the Koh Tao Hospital, arrived at the scene shortly after at around 4:45 p.m.

Authorities administered life-saving measures but were unable to resuscitate the pair. The billionaire couple died at the scene with no apparent signs of struggle or foul play, said Police Colonel Kriangkrai Kraikaew, Chief of the Koh Tao Police.

Medical officials at Koh Tao hospital have since indicated the cause of their deaths to be drowning, The Phuket News noted. It has also emerged that the couple had some underlying health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea, which might have contributed to the horrific situation.

How the drowning incident played out remains a mystery as closed-circuit television cameras at the venue had not been working for several months for maintenance during the COVID-19 outbreak, according to Jamahkiri Resort & Spa management.

It leaves the police to suspect that one of the spouses might have been swimming in the pool and needed help at some point, which prompted the other person to come to the rescue. However, due to puzzling circumstances, both ended up losing their lives to the waters.

Investigations are continuing while the bodies are scheduled to be examined at Police General Hospital's Institute of Forensic Medicine later today. Authorities said that they wanted to secure multiple doctors' and experts’ opinions on the case.

The couple, who owned a Phuket five-star hotel, also have some dealings in the plastic industry. Their son believed that the billionaire couple died from a tragic accident and that hotel staff, local police and medical responders did what they could to save his parents, The Pattaya News noted.
