US President Joe Biden has revealed his conversations over tea with Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle on Sunday after the G7 summit. During their 45-minute cozy exchange, Biden divulged that he was asked by the Queen for his insights on Russian and Chinese presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
The US president shared a quick peek of their meeting to White House reporters on the tarmac at Heathrow airport before boarding his flight to Brussels. “We had a long talk, she was very generous. I don’t think she’d be insulted, but she reminded me of my mother. In terms of the look of her and just the generosity.”
According to The Guardian, Biden had also invited the Queen to the White House.
It is a written rule that those who speak to the monarch are not supposed to reveal what her majesty says. Her weekly conversations with British prime ministers are also kept confidential. As head of the state, she does not publicly give her opinion on political matters.
Although no specific details of the discussion between Biden and the Queen have been disclosed by Buckingham Palace, a photo was taken of the Queen and her visitors in Windsor Castle’s Grand Corridor. The photo shows the monarch dressed in pink flanked by the US president and his wife.
The G7 summit has seen the British Royal Family taking a particularly active role. A reception was hosted by the Queen for the G7 leaders at the Eden Project in Cornwall, and was attended by Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William and wife, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.
The president and his wife flew from Cornwall aboard the Marine One presidential helicopter. They arrived at Windsor in a black Range Rover. They were greeted by the Queen who stood alone after the passing of her husband Prince Philip just two months ago.
The meeting over tea in the castle in Berkshire between Biden and the British monarch took place after the US president inspected the Guard of Honor at the central quadrangle. Before the ceremony, assembled soldiers from the Queen's Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards gave a royal salute as the US national anthem was played.
Biden is the 13th president in office who has met with Queen Elizabeth.
