President Biden delivered a speech during the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute 46th Annual Gala held this week where he criticized former president Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans for creating a "broken immigration system."
"We need our colleagues to act," the president said. "For decades, immigration reform had been a bipartisan issue; unfortunately, my predecessor spent four years gutting the immigration system.
Regarding immigration, Biden promised to continue fighting for DACA recipients and stated that he is directing his administration to increase the number of Latin American refugees accepted to the U.S.
"Until Congress acts, I'm going to keep using every tool at my disposal as president of the United States to preserve and protect DACA, keep fighting for dreamers and build a safe and humane immigration system," he said.
During the speech, he also highlighted several key policies and accomplishments his administration passed that benefit Latinos. Those wins included the creation of millions of new jobs, passing the American Rescue Plan and expanding health services to more Latinos.
The president also promised to continue investing in the Hispanic community, and he restated his commitment to ban assault weapons in the country and eliminate student loan debt, as both issues deeply affect the Hispanic population in the U.S.
