Amazon announced Tuesday that it will not move forward with plans to list tariff surcharges on its discount platform Amazon Haul, after President Donald Trump personally called Jeff Bezos to denounce the idea as a "hostile and political act."
Tensions flared after a Punchbowl News report revealed that Amazon was considering displaying the cost of Trump's tariffs alongside product prices. The move was intended to highlight rising consumer costs driven by trade policies targeting Chinese imports.
While Amazon had not yet implemented any changes, the news quickly drew sharp criticism from the the Trump administration. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, speaking alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, framed the proposal as a political attack.
Trump also called Bezos directly to express his disapproval, prompting Amazon to walk back the plan publicly later the same day, according to NBC News. The reversal comes amid Amazon's efforts to maintain a warmer relationship with the Trump administration.
Amazon's decision to avoid publicly itemizing tariff charges helped avert a deeper rift with the White House as online retailers continue grappling with the real impact of Trump's new import tariffs.
