This is definitely a week Pittsburgh Steelers fans want to forget.
Not only did the Steelers lose a game they were expected to win against the Miami Dolphins, but their star quarterback is hurting. According to ESPN, Roethlisberger did in fact have “arthroscopic knee surgery on his left knee Monday morning.”
“I felt something funny in my knee,” said Roethlisberger after the game.
It’s unknown how long Roethlisberger will be sidelined, but it looks like the two-time Super Bowl champion will indeed be out for the team’s next game against the New England Patriots. Backup quarterback Landry Jones should get the start at home against Bill Belichick’s crew, and then a much needed by week follows.
There is some positive news regarding Roethlisberger’s operation, however. That same report has indicated that the surgery was a success, and that it was more of a cleanup instead of a major surgical repair. Roethlisberger has missed a lot of games since entering the league more than 10 years ago, and just last season he missed four games because of a knee injury. Roethlisberger is 34 years old and he has three more years remaining on his contract.
Steelers’ management was criticized a little this offseason because they never signed a proven veteran backup quarterback for such a situation. Only time will tell if the Steelers and Mike Tomlin can weather this storm.
At 4-2, the Steelers still lead the AFC North thanks to the New York Giants defeating the Baltimore Ravens. The Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the most disappointing teams in the league, but the Steelers will need Roethlisberger for the long hall.
