The San Francisco 49ers opened their brand new Levi’s stadium the same way they debuted in Candlestick Park in 1971; with a loss. Jay Cutler threw four touchdown passes, three to Brandon Marshall as the Chicago Bears beat the 49ers 28-20 on Sunday Night Football.
The capacity crowd at the new stadium in Santa Clara was ready to celebrate on Sunday Night as their opening game was nationally televised on NBC. The Niners jumped out to an early 17-0 lead and the excitement continued at halftime as Snoop Dogg performed and thrilled the hometown crowd. However, the festivities did not last as the Bears spoiled the party with three touchdowns in the 4th quarter.
The 49ers got off to a hot start in the new stadium, forcing the Bears into a three and out on their opening drive, and then blocking rookie Pat O’Donnell’s punt from the back of the end zone. San Francisco had great field position and scored on a Michael Crabtree touchdown a few minutes later.
The 49ers were up by 10 late in the 2nd quarter when running back Frank Gore broke through the line for an 8-yard touchdown. It should have been Gore’s second touchdown of the game as a few minutes earlier Gore broke a 50 yard touchdown run that was called back because of an Anquan Boldin holding penalty. The call was questionable to say the least as replays showed Boldin barely touched the defender on the play.
Jay Cutler led the Bears back into the game just before the half, as thanks to Latino Center, Brian De La Puente, Cutler had enough time to find star receiver, Brandon Marshall, for a 17-yard touchdown. Marshall made a spectacular one handed catch over three defenders to keep the game close as the Niners lead was only 17-7 at halftime.
San Francisco opened up the second half with a long scoring drive that took over nine minutes off the game clock. They had to settle for a field goal, but the valuable time of possession was more important than the extra four points as the third quarter was almost over by the time the Bears touched the ball.
The Bears opened the 4th quarter with another touchdown pass from the Cutler-Marshall combo. Cutler found Marshall on a crucial 3rd and 4 from the San Francisco 5-yard line. Robbie Gould tacked on the extra point to cut the Niners lead to six.
In a stunning turn of events, Bears cornerback, Kyle Fuller intercepted Colin Kaepernick on the next play. Kaepernick threw what looked like a completion to Crabtree, but as he fell to the ground, Fuller took the ball out of his hands for the interception. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Kaepernick, the ball was placed on the San Francisco three-yard line where Cutler threw a touchdown pass to tight-end Martellus Bennett on the next play.
Fuller did it again on the 49ers next drive, as the rookie out of Virginia Tech intercepted Kaepernick again, this time on 3rd down. Fuller returned the ball into 49ers territory where the Bears were in business once again with all of the momentum on their side.
Kaepernick did not have his best night in his Levi’s Stadium debut, finishing 21 for 34 for 248 yards, one touchdown, 3 interceptions and one fumble.
Cutler connected with Marshall for a third time after the 49ers turnover, putting the Bears in complete control with an eight point lead. The Bears outscored the 49ers, 28-3 after Gore’s touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Cutler was better than Kaepernick on this night, going 23-34 for 176 yards, 4 touchdowns and no turnovers.
The 49ers converted a huge 4th and 6 with two minutes left to go in the game and the ball on the Bears 40-yard line, but it didn’t matter as Kaepernick’s 4th and 9 attempt to Crabtree in the end zone a minute later went incomplete, sealing the victory for Chicago.
Game Notes: Five starters on the Bears defense were injured in the game, including star Charles Tillman. 49ers all pro tight-end, Vernon Davis left the game with an ankle injury.
