A baby elephant was found crying at a zoo in China after his mother attacked and abandonned him. The elephant was born in August at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in Rongcheng, China. Not long after his birth, his mother stomped on him. Zoo workers were hoping the injury was accidental and treated the calf before returning it to its mother. When he was attacked again, he was removed from her enclosure. What happened next stunned zookeepers as the abandonned animal began crying and would not stop until five hours later.
"The calf was very upset and he was crying for five hours before he could be consoled," an zoo employee told Metro U.K. "He couldn't bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him." Zoo workers are unsure why his mother abandoned little Zhuang Zhuang, but has since been adopted by the zookeeper who rescued him while his mother attacked him. He is currently living and doing well at the Shendiaoshan wild animal reserve.
