Prosecutors in Germany are looking to bring 30 former guards at the Auschwitz concentration camp on trial for their actions during the Second World War. The Auschwitz facility became synonymous with the Nazi era. It is the most infamous camp where Nazi's took Jewish prisoners to be killed during Hitler's genocide. While Hitler ruled Germany 6-million Jews including men, women and children were killed at various concentration camps across Germany and the lands the third Reich conquered. The 30 men Germany is looking to prosecute were brought to the attention of the Central Nazi Crime Investigation Unit after a former Nazi was recently sentenced to five-years in jail.
The Central Nazi Crime Investigation Unit announced to the German media and the world on Tuesday that they are looking to open up a series of new war crimes trials even though the war has been over for nearly 70-years. All of the defendants in these cases are close to or in their 90's. Kurt Schrimm a federal prosecutor in Ludwigsburg and the head of the CNCIU led an investigation into 49 suspected Nazi criminals. The evidence produced in the case was strong enough to charge 30 former Auschwitz guards with murder.
The possible charges of murder against the 30 former Nazi's are part of a push by German officials to prosecute war crimes. The government has been accused of neglecting and overlooking Nazi war crimes. The German government began its' investigation into the 49 accused Nazis in 2011 after suspect John Demjanjuk was sentenced to five-years in prison. The country's most recent trial was that of 92-year-old SS Officer Siert Bruins. The SS Officer is accused of killing a Dutch resistance fighter in 1944. Bruins is the oldest known Nazi to be put on trial in Germany.
Between 1940 and 1944 German Nazi's delivered Jews and other persecuted minority groups to the death camp at Auschwitz. There were over 7,000 SS members working at the camp. Jews were often killed by being placed inside gas chambers, over worked, starved, shot or used as test subjects for medical experiments.
