Nine inmates were freed in the attack. The L.A Times says the men were in prison for rape, murder, kidnapping and theft. Federal authorities are searching for the nine escaped prisoners and the men who helped them escape.
Jorge Luis Ventura, Abelardo Garcia, Jose Antonio Martinez, Felix Campos, Misael Pineda, Jesus Castro, Vicencio Delgado, Erick Rodriguez and Gonzalo Lara are the nine inmates that were freed by the gunmen.
According to a news release issued after the prison break it was unclear as to what exactly happened when the gunmen got into the prison. The Mexican prison system is known for being broken. The director of the prison, Manuel Damian Chavarria left the jail after the nine inmates escaped and has not been located.
This is not the first major prison break in Mexico. The number of escaped inmates has gone up in recent years. Last September 130 inmates escaped from the Piedras Negras prison using a tunnel. In December of 2010 141 inmates escaped from a prison Nuevo Laredo.
The BBC is reporting that Guerrero is one of the states most affected by gang violence and drug cartels in Mexico. The small hamlet of La Ruana was besieged by the Knights Templars drug cartel until its citizens took it upon themselves to remove the gang from their town. The result was an all-out war between the gang and the citizens. Eventually the army was called in to protect the town from anymore violence.
