In August, the German racing driver Markus Winkelhock piloted the radical Audi R8 e-tron sports car to set a blistering 8:09.099 lap around the Nürburgring, the fastest time of any production-based electric vehicle.

Two electric motors, each transferring energy to an axle, combine to produce 308-hp and an enormous 604 lb.-ft. of torque. The massive torque figures allow the R8 e-tron to pull from 0-to-60 in a scant 4.6 seconds up to a limited top speed of 124 mph. What's more, intelligent placement of the R8 e-tron allows for an optimized 42/58 weight distribution.

Inside, the R8 e-tron boasts all the top class cabin furnishings we've come to expect from Audi. Most outstanding of all is a 7.7-inch AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen for a rear-view mirror. Audi claims its small camera fitted in a compact, aerodynamic housing can promise a better peripheral view than a conventional mirror.

Establishing its performance credentials combined with creature comforts, Audi readies the R8 e-tron for its market debut in a couple months time. Audi projects that the R8 e-tron will reach dealers by late 2012 to early 2013.
