An exciting second Dutch TT qualifying at Assen finished with a magical last lap performed by Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Cal Crutchlow. Marking his career first MotoGP pole, Crutchlow's fastest lap was a wide 0.357 seconds faster than Marc Marquez. What's more, Crutchlow's pole marks the first achieved by a Briton since Jeremy McWilliams.
"It's good. I'm pleased obviously, but for me it's not a true pole because Jorge [Lorenzo] wasn't here," said Crutchlow, who has taken two podiums so far this season to hold fourth in the championship standings.
Cal Crutchlow refers to the Thursday practice where Jorge Lorenzo's heavy high-side violently threw the reigning world champion into the pavement, fracturing his collarbone. Desperate for the title this season, Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo was flown back to Barcelona to perform surgery. A titanium plate and eight screws later, Lorenzo miraculously returned to Assen Friday evening to try and compete for the weekend.
"If Jorge is confident and feels good enough to race tomorrow it's a good choice," said Valentino Rossi. "If tomorrow he doesn't feel good or has pain then it's a good choice not to race. He's fighting for the championship, so if he wants to try it's a good choice [to try and ride]."
