A suspect has been arrested by police on Wednesday after he allegedly sexually assaulted two victims, including an elderly disabled woman, in Los Angeles, Southern California.
The Fontana Police Department (FPD) alleged that the suspect Raul Christopher Alzaga, 28, of the San Gabriel Valley, had failed an earlier assault attempt on Monday in the Fontana neighborhood after the first victim cried for help and a family member challenged him to a scuffle.
The suspect, who was out of jail on felony parole, then retreated from the home and barged into a nearby property shortly after, in the 7800 block of Juniper Avenue at around 1 a.m, Fox News reported.
Alzaga reportedly forced his entry by removing the window screens and ultimately performed a callous sexual assault against the elderly disabled woman homeowner, according to public information officer Kevin Anderson.
The victim, who is paralyzed from the waist down, alleged that the rapist aggressively threw her to the floor, completely aware she was vulnerable and unable to defend herself. The helpless victim then resorted to praying out loud and telling her attacker, "I’m praying for you, God loves you."
However, the ruthless assailant did not budge. Alzaga reportedly repeatedly sexually assaulted the elderly woman for some four hours. When the sun came up, the woman got a clearer look at her attacker's face and distinctive tattoos. This allowed her to unmistakably identify him and lodge a solid complaint to the police later. Alzaga fled the scene later that morning.
“She definitely thought her life was over. And she just pleaded with God that this isn’t the way it ends,” the victim's daughter said. "She was able to survive this attack by praying, by speaking to the individual words of prayer and that's why she is alive with us today."
On Tuesday, a surveillance video of the suspect was issued to the public, helping police to track him down to a vehicle, Fontana Herald News noted. He then led authorities on a brief pursuit after he fled on foot, running through several alleys and backyards. Arresting officers claimed that Alzaga brandished a knife after being cornered by police.
“Alzaga refused to surrender and immediately began to cut his own throat with a knife he had [in] his possession,” FPD Chief Billy Green said.
Alzaga, who collapsed in a pile of garbage from self-inflicted injuries, has been seized by law enforcement. He is now recovering in hospital under police watch. Two other people who were in the vehicle with him were also taken into custody for questioning, according to CBSLA.
The victim’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist the woman in renting a safer apartment as well as to help them with the legal and medical fees.
"This monstrous attack has impacted her not only physically, but mentally as well. By the grace of God she miraculously survived this horrible ordeal and needs many things to help with the rebuilding process," the appeal reads.
