Amidst the release of the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S on Friday (September 20), Apple quietly release an update to their Apple TV set-top box. The release added iTunes Radio functionality and support for AirPlay from iCloud and iTunes music purchases as well as several bug fixes. It looks like that in fixing a couple of bugs, it paved the way for other bugs to creep up and users have been experiencing bricking on their device which forced the Cupertino company to pull the update. Now if users try to update the ATV they message displayed is that "your Apple TV is up to date" with version 5.3.
Some people seemed to have lost content on the device while others lost internet connectivity, according to 9to5Mac. The site also reports that the update was taken down last night on the device itself, but the 6.0 firmware is still available on Apple's website. A user on the MacRumors forum said, "Bricked after update. Finally found micro USB cord, hooked up to iTunes and said it was restored. Said to connect to the TV. Hit ok and the light instantly started flaunt again. Same graphic on TV screen to reconnect to iTunes. Went through this three times and no love."
The update is working for some users with no problems, but for others it has made a dent on their weekend binging on television shows, movies and cat videos on YouTube. Apple has not made a statement to this issue and a quick update is expected in the coming days. Did you experience any problems updating the Apple TV 6.0 firmware? Sound off below!
