Former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner has spent over $100,000 on a potential New York City mayoral bid according to the Wall Street Journal.

Weiner, who was congressman for New York's nineth district for 12 years, was preparing for a possible run at the mayor job in 2011 when he resigned from the U.S. Congress after he was caught in a sexting scandal. He sent pictures of his himself to other women who were not his wife. He made things worse by lying about not doing it on several different occasions, including television.

According to the Journal, Weiner still has $4.3 million in his city campaign account which expires after 2013. The New York Daily News reported last summer that Weiner started flirting with the idea of not just a mayoral run but also a run at other citywide positions such as comptroller and public advocate.

The money that has been spent has been on polling and research. The polls were done by David Binder Research out of California, who were paid $52,000 for consulting and "research" for Weiner.

In January, city residents began receiving calls from pollsters about the upcoming mayor's race and listing Weiner's name in a list of candidates in a possible Democratic primary.

"Clearly it was someone polling to test whether Anthony Weiner has any viability in the mayor's race," said a Manhattan Democrat who took the telephone survey.

Since leaving office, Weiner has stayed out of the public light since resigning his position in Congress. He has played stay-at-home dad to his 6-month-old son. His wife is Huma Abedin, a senior aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton. After the Supreme Court made their Obamacare ruling last summer, Weiner stepped back into the political spotlight briefly to applaud a cause that he fought for during his time in Congress. But he still feels bad about the whole "sexting" scandal.

"I still have regrets," Weiner told WNYC radio in June 2012. "I paid a very high price ... I feel great regrets for the people I've let down."

There has been no confirmation about whether or not Weiner will run for any post in the New York ,but there are a few things that tell folks that he is considering it. In addition to his war chest of over $4 million, he still pays rent on a campaign office that has not been in use since 2011.

Many democrats who have already thrown their hats into the mayoral race all believe that if Weiner wants to run, he should.

"I think Anthony should be there. I think he should run. Just stop texting," said New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate John Liu.
