FX has renewed the period drama series "The Americans" for a fifth and sixth season.
The fifth season will arrive in 2017 with 13-episodes and it will be followed by a 10-episode sixth season in 2018. Despite the sixth season being the end to "The Americans," creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields are staying at the network as the pair have signed overall deals with FX to develop new projects.
Weisberg and Fields spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in March revealing how they want to end the series.
"[FX has] come to us and said that that’s not going to be a business decision from them — it’s a creative decision from us. So they’ve liberated us to do what’s going to be right for the show," said Fields. "There’s no danger that there will be a sudden end to the show. I think we’ll be able to reach the end that feels right to us dramatically."
Weisberg added how they plan to end the series, saying: "We have a pretty good sense. I would say we got it down to about four different endings. So we’re pretty well honed in on a zone we’re going to go to, but we haven’t decided for sure. And the way that we work, it could also all change. As it gets closer, we could come up with something totally different that would surprise me."
The series stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as two KGB spies posing as a married American couple during the Cold War. Over the course of its run, the series has received critical acclaim with Rotten Tomatoes giving the series over 90 percent approval rating.
Also seen in the fourth season currently airing on the network is Dylan Baker, Brandon J. Dirden, Lev Gorn, Annet Mahendu, Costa Ronin, Keidrich Sellati, Holly Taylor, Richard Thomas, Alison Wright and Noah Emmerich. The season four finale titled "Persona Non Grata" is set for June 8.
