On the evening of Sunday August 4, 2013 it is believed James Lee DiMaggio killed his neighbor Christina Anderson in his own home. Following the murder, DiMaggio's house was set on fire and Anderson's two children, 16-year-old Hannah and 8-year-old Ethan, are now missing.
The burned remains of a young boy were found in DiMaggio's house. Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that the body is that of Ethan Anderson. An autopsy was performed on Tuesday, but an official identification is not likely to be released until Friday. Until an identification has been made, police are working under the belief DiMaggio has kidnapped both Hannah and Ethan.
When the Amber Alert was first issued, it covered the entire state of California. On Wednesday the alert was expanded to include Oregon and Washington State. It is believed that the 40-year-old San Diego man is taking Hannah and possibly Ethan to Canada. Witnesses in Oregon called police to report seeing DiMaggio's blue Nissan, license plate number 6WCU986 in Lakeview, Oregon.
Brett Anderson is the father of Hannah and Ethan, he went on his local TV News station to plead with DiMaggio to bring Hannah home.
"Jim I can't fathom what you were thinking," Anderson said on camera. "The damage is done. I'm begging you to let my daughter go. You've taken everything else."
Anderson continued by reassuring his daughter she would be found saying, "Hannah, we all love you very much. If you have a chance, you take it, you run. You'll be found."
One possible motive, according to the Detroit Free Press friends of Hannah Anderson believed James DiMaggio has a crush on the girl. Friends and family that have spoken with the press all say DiMaggio and the Andersons were very close. The two children would call DiMaggio "Uncle Jim." DiMaggio even took Hannah on a week-long trip to Hollywood for her 16th birthday.
"He said he had a crush on her, but didn't mean it in an intimate way," Marissa Chavez, Hannah's 15-year-old friend told The San Diego Union Tribune. "He said, 'if I was your age, I'd date you.'"
A mother of one of Hannah's friends also told reporters Hannah was "creeped out" when DiMaggio said he had a crush on her. "[Hannah] wouldn't go up there anymore because it was just too awkward between them," said Angelina Amati.
Amati also told the press Hannah did not appear to be afraid of DiMaggio but now feels the girl's life is in danger. The Anderson family and police are working tirelessly to bring Hannah and hopefully Ethan home safely.
