With Selena Quintanilla’s 20th death anniversary right around the corner, news about the Queen of Tejano Music haven’t ceased. Numerous outlets are honoring the late singer with tributes: remembering how catchy her songs were, how relatable her lyrics were, how amazing her red lips were, and how her legacy still lives even 20 years after her untimely death by the hands of her former friend and Fan Club president, Yolanda Saldívar on March 31, 1995. Selena was en route to become the first successful crossover Latina star, transitioning through the Spanish and English markets seamlessly with her enormous talent, charisma and charm.

She had already conquered Latin America before she passed, and now, Alvaro Torres is claiming he was responsible for some of that success. According to LaBotana.com, The Salvadoran singer-songwriter is saying he was never recognized for the influence he had over Selena’s career after they recorded the song “Buenos Amigos” together. Torres insists the duet gave Selena international fame as he was “at the peak of his career” and Quintanilla was only known in a very specific area of the United States.

Meanwhile, Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, who used to be her manager, said that he was told the purpose for the collaboration was to introduce Torres to Selena’s market. “EMI Records told me the exact opposite, that through Selena, they wanted to introduce Torres to the Tejano market.” He added that no one in their family, not even Selena had any relationship with Torres beyond exchanging a few “hellos” during meetings organized by EMI.
