An enraged father allegedly murdered his toddler son after his attempts to sell the child went in vain.
The suspect, Mohammad Noushad, who hails from the Amroha district in India’s Uttar Pradesh, was arrested on Wednesday, July 28, after his father-in-law filed a complaint alleging him of murdering his grandson.
Based on the complaint, the police initiated an investigation. The investigators interrogated the suspect’s wife, Nazrana, who told police that they were from a poor family and her husband was stubborn about selling the child for money.
She also claimed that her husband was an alcoholic and wanted the money for gambling to get rich.
"She was against this decision and there used to have regular fights between them over it. On Tuesday afternoon, Naushad sent Nazrana to borrow a phone charger from a neighbor in the Dhanora Mandi area. She became suspicious and returned quickly. And she caught Naushad choking the child, who was unconscious by then," a Times of India report quoted the police officer as saying.
The mother rushed her baby boy to a nearby hospital, however, doctors declared him dead on arrival. The body was sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. No updates were available about the child's exact age.
"The couple got married four years ago. They had two children. Naushad is a laborer and addicted to alcohol. He is fond of gambling too. To get rid of his poverty, he wanted to sell his son. When he could not find a buyer, he choked his one-year-old child to death in frustration," Station house officer (SHO) Jaiveer Singh said.
"A case has been registered. The accused has been sent to jail," the SHO added. The charges imposed on him are unclear at this time.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a female doctor abducted a newborn boy from a hospital and sold him to another couple in return for money to repay her loans.
Dr. Rashmi Shashikumar, a psychiatrist at a private hospital, is accused of kidnapping an infant boy from a government maternity home in the city of Bengaluru in India.
The doctor allegedly kidnapped the infant and sold him to a couple who had been consulting her for help to deal with their differently-abled child.
The mother had expressed her desire for another baby but couldn’t conceive due to health issues. The accused suggested the couple should opt for surrogacy and lied to them that she can arrange a surrogate mother.
The accused then went to the maternity home and fled with a baby boy through the back gate. The couple who received the infant were unaware of the doctor’s alleged crime.
The doctor was later located and arrested. The child was handed over to his birth parents.
