Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, has been found hanged in his Massachusetts prison.
According to CNN, the Massachusetts Department of Correction said officers found, the 27-year-old former NFL star, suspended from a bed sheet attached to a window. Hernandez was in his cell at the Souza Baranowski prison in Shirley.
"Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.," reads the correction department's statement.
On Wednesday April 15, 2015, Aaron Hernandez, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the late-night shooting of a man near his home. He was also convicted of gun charges in the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez’ fiancée’s sister. The man was shot six times, and his body was found in a Massachusetts industrial park.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Hernandez was with Lloyd at the time he was killed, these included a home security video from the former NFL player's house, witness testimony and cellphone record that indicated Lloyd's movements on the night of the murder.
On Friday 14, Hernandez was found not guilty in a double murder trial of two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, in a July 2012 drive-by shooting.
Hernandez played college football at the University of Florida, where he was a member of a BCS National Championship team and was recognized as an All-American. He was drafted by NFL's New England Patriots as the 15th pick in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
The Massachusetts State Police are still investigating Hernandez death.
