A regular day for Chennai, India resident R Geetha turned into a nightmarish ordeal when she was targeted by a pair of criminals.

The two coordinated the attack on the eight-month pregnant woman just to steal her gold chain. The victim and her husband claim that police initially did not take their complaint seriously, taking action only after a video of the attack went viral on social media.

Just outside her home in Renuka Nagar, Zamin Pallavaram the 25-year-old mother-to-be was offering her prayer at a small temple when she was targeted. Geetha was praying alone on Friday, April 9 around 7:40 a.m. at the small temple. She was unaware that two men had stopped a few feet away with the intent to mug her.

Surveillance cameras aimed at the main road in front of the home caught the attack. The two men on a scooter were seen going past the woman only to circle back and pause just a few feet away.

While the driver started the vehicle and moved a little ahead, the pillion is seen walking back towards the woman. The Hindu reported that the woman had her eyes closed while praying as one of the men approached her. When she realized that someone was tugging at her chain, she retaliated. The man pushed her down on the road. Grabbing the chain, he dragged the pregnant woman almost 50 feet before being able to get the chain off of her.

His partner was seen fleeing with the vehicle as the man ran to catch up with him. Stunned by the attack the woman ran back into her home. In the video, other motorists and neighbors can be seen doing nothing to help the woman.

Geetha had to be taken to a nearby hospital. While her unborn child was unharmed, the woman sustained injuries.

The Times of India reported that the police did not take Geeta’s husband Ramachandran seriously. The video from the surveillance footage over the weekend became viral. This mounted pressure on the police to take action. Finally, on Monday, April 12 the police recorded an official complaint and launched an investigation.
