A 77-year-old woman is dead after she reportedly tried to foil a carjacking by a 23-year-old man who had broken into her home in Buckhead.

The deceased was identified as Eleanor Bowles, allegedly stabbed to death by the suspect identified as Antonio Brown.

According to officials, Brown broke into the home of Bowles in Buckhead at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. The 23-year-old was trying to steal the 2021 Lexus RS350 of Bowles but the 77-year-old walked in and interrupted the alleged theft.

Brown ended up stabbing Bowles multiple times and then took off in her car according to police. However, authorities were able to track down the vehicle and recovered it in DeKalb County.

As of this writing, it remains unclear how Brown was able to get into the gated neighborhood.

The son of Bowles was visiting for the holidays and was shocked to find the lifeless body of his mother in her garage. The 77-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The son came home to visit his mom for the holidays…,” Atlanta Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said during a press conference. “This is not a way that a family should have to spend their holiday season, mourning and grieving a death of a loved one.”

Brown was arrested on Monday, Dec. 12, facing several charges. This includes being charged with murder, aggravated battery, possession of a knife, elder abuse and hijacking a motor vehicle. The 23-year-old was eventually booked at the Fulton County jail.

It was added that it was Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens who recognized Brown from the photo of a person of interest publicized by officials. He was the one who tipped authorities which led to the suspect’s arrest.

“The killing of Ms. Bowles is understandably rocking our community. My heart aches for these family members,” Dickens said.

Also, Dickens announced the arrest of a third suspect in the murders of a 12-year-old and 15-year-old last month.

“I share our community’s outrage and heartbreak,” Dickens said. “Let me be very clear to those who want to do harm in our community, who want to perpetrate this crimes — if you pull a gun or pull out a knife in our city to hurt, harm or kill someone, you will be arrested and sent to jail.”
