Outrage over sexual assault has been overwhelming in Nigeria after the rape and murder of a job seeker. Following Iniubong Umoren’s death, many women have come forward to share the horrors of the sexual assault they were subjected to. The victim had been lured by her attacker with a fake job interview. The accused, Uduak Frank Akpan raped the woman, beat her to death and buried her body in a shallow grave.
Umoren’s body was later found and Akpan later arrested. During the victim’s funeral, Dorothy Edet shared how she too nearly became a victim as she too received the fake job interview message. Even though she escaped Akpan’s trap, she claims that she has been a victim of sexual assault since her childhood. Edet said that she was raped on multiple occasions by her uncle, her pastor and strangers. Akpan also confessed that he had raped at least six other women using the same fake job offer trap.
