The family of an 18-year-old girl in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India was shocked to find out that she was pregnant. The teen claims that she was repeatedly raped by her grandfather. Police arrested the man in his 70s for raping his granddaughter.
The victim, who cannot be named to protect her identity, informed her family that she had been feeling ill. She complained of abdominal pain. Worried about her health, her mother took her to a nearby hospital. Medical examinations proved that the teen was pregnant.
The teen confided that she had been raped. After police were informed of the sexual assault they spoke with the victim. The victim told the police that her grandfather had raped her, The New Indian Express reported.
The All Women Police of Thiruvottiyur, Chennai on Saturday, May 15 arrested the man identified as P. Pannerselvam, The Hindu reported.
Pannerselvam’s daughter became a widow a few year ago. After her husband’s death, the woman along with her two daughters moved back to her father’s home on Washermanpet, Chennai. The woman started to work a few months ago. This left her daughters in the care of her father. Taking advantage of the woman’s absence, the accused reportedly raped the teen.
The victim claims that the maternal grandfather threatened to kill her if she told anyone of the rape. He also told her that he would kill her sister if she reported the incident. She said that the old man continued to sexually assault her, leading to her pregnancy.
The accused was arrested and charged with rape.
In a similar incident, in January a teenage victim of rape was found to be pregnant. The 17-year-old victim from Tamil Nadu’s Theni district complained of stomach aches. Her grandparents, with who she lived, took her to a hospital. Medical examinations proved that the teen was eight months pregnant.
She revealed that two local men had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions, India Today reported. On Jan. 2 she was taken to the hospital after falling ill. She gave birth to a girl but died during childbirth. Her relatives filed a police complaint against the men who she accused of raping her.
