Three people are dead after a school principal from a provincial school in the Philippines reportedly gunned down a teacher and her husband before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life on Tuesday, Apr. 12.
The suspect was identified as Warren Escobar, a 56-year-old principal at the Bilbao Uybico National High School in Barangay Pook, Hinoba-an.
Killed were senior high school teacher Almarisa Arroy and her husband, Christopher Arroy, GMA Network reported.
Based on initial investigations of the incident, Escobar shot Arroy and her husband for yet to be known reasons. After shooting the couple, the 56-year-old turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
According to witnesses in a report from the Sun Star, Escobar arrived at the school in his pick-up with two firearms at around 8:00 a.m.
When the Arroy couple arrived, Escobar allegedly opened fire on them. The husband fell from the motorcycle that they were riding and died on the spot. Almarisa managed to still flee and hide in a classroom.
However, the school principal managed to track her down and reportedly shot her in the face. Escobar would then return to his vehicle and shoot himself with a .45 caliber pistol.
All three were found dead at the scene when local police arrived after it was reported to authorities. The case remains under investigation as of this writing.
In another report from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Hinobaan Mayor Ernesto Estrao claimed that he has received information that the principal was angry at Arroy because a complaint was lodged against him with the Office of the President.
Escobar reportedly received a notice to explain himself in five days with the 56-year-old blaming the high school teacher for the filing of the complaint. Details of the complaint were not divulged.
Additionally, Escobar was allegedly facing sexual harassment complaints from Arroy before the shooting incident. Sun Star added that it was also supposedly the principal’s last day at UBNHS since he was handed a suspension.
