After last years successful installment of Wi-Fi and cellular service in a dozen subway stations in New York City it is being reported that Transit Wireless is ramping up its efforts in phase two. The second part of the expansion includes 40 subway stations including 29 new stations in Queens and 11 in Manhattan, with Grand Central Terminal among them. According to Transit Wireless the latest additions to the project will provide about 250 million people a year with internet access while waiting for their train. That means no more getting lost without cell service to tell you which train to catch!

“Hundreds of millions of new annual subway patrons will soon receive the benefits of having all the major wireless carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and Wi-Fi service in underground stations – including Queens. This is a huge benefit to all the visitors and tourists that come to New York City every day,” said William A. Bayne Jr., CEO of Transit Wireless.

"We are not only extending our network to all underground stations in Queens and additional stations in Manhattan," says Transit CEO William A. Bayne Jr., "we are setting the stage for future innovations that will provide riders with an enhanced experience in the New York City subway system.”

Among the announcement of more Wi-Fi locations coming to subway stations Transit Wireless also announced how many New Yorkers are actually using the service. According to the site its Wi-Fi network had 2.6 million connections through its 36 stations last year, processing 60 terabytes of data. Smartphones made up the bulk of that data usage, accounting for 76 percent. New Yorkers should see phase two complete by the June.
