A 33-year-old woman from Nakuru was found dead by local authorities who believe she was killed on Monday, Aug. 30.
The woman was identified as Martha Waithera of Lakeview estate in Nakuru town and believed to have been a victim of a domestic dispute. She was living in the house with her boyfriend later on identified as Moses Leparani.
Leparani has since been missing and is being treated as the main suspect in the murder. Police are now launching a search for the 35-year-old man and are set to be interrogated.
According to Nakuru Town East deputy county commissioner Eric Wanyonyi, the 33-year-old woman’s body bore physical injuries with her private part bleeding.
“We visited the scene alongside police and investigating officers where we found the lady with some physical injuries and blood on her private parts. We have been informed that she spent the better part of yesterday with the man who is believed to be her come-we-stay husband, and there are no details of any misunderstanding,” Wanyonyi said to an outlet.
The couple had two children who were left at the scene when the incident happened, a 10-year-old and a four-month-old child.
According to one of the residents, they woke up to the screams of the 10-year-old boy who was crying because of his mother’s death.
“This morning, my nephew was screaming out and when I went to Waithera’s house to find out what was happening, I found the door locked from outside. I got in and after finding the boy at the bedroom door, he told me that his dad had killed his mother,” Margaret Nyambura Ng’ang’a stated.
The suspect is said to be a businessman who was selling maize for a living. According to the cousin of Waithera, Leparani had moved in with Martha and both started to live as husband and wife for the past three years.
She added that Martha had stopped working some months ago after giving birth to their four-month-old baby. It remains unclear what instigated the alleged domestic issue.
The body of Waithera was brought to the Nakuru Municipality morgue and is pending postmortem.
