A 28-year-old woman who died after falling out of a police vehicle was found to have suffered two separate skull fractures on the back and side of her head. However, it appears that she was already in a very delicate situation at the time, allegedly suffering from internal hemorrhage and swelling of the brain.
According to a report by the Daily Beast, Brianna Grier that at the time of her death, the internal hemorrhage and swelling of the brain led to it shifting from one side of the skull to the other. It was added that the injuries were caused by a violent collision with a hard object, and the legal representatives of the family quipped.
The medical findings were revealed on Monday with the parents of Grier holding a photo of their daughter and grandchildren. The twin daughters of the 28-year-old are now left in the care of her grandparents.
“That’s why we’re here. We’re trying to get answers so we can finally tell them … what happened,” Marvin Grier said as he addressed the audience at Mt. Zion Second Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Grier was described by her family as a smart and loving mother. They added that the 28-year-old suffered from intense mental health struggles after being diagnosed with schizophrenia.
An official autopsy result on Grier has yet to be released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. However, video footage from a body camera worn by one of the officers from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department was released.
The video shows how Grier was put inside the vehicle, threatening to harm herself if she were taken to jail. She was threatened with a taser but this was never used.
According to attorney Eric Hertz, the 28-year-old was dropped at least once.
When she was put in the vehicle, the officers appeared to make sure that the doors were locked. But when Grier fell out of the police car driven by Timothy Legette, the police officer and driver stops to check on the 28-year-old black woman.
She eventually died at the hospital, brain dead from her injuries.
Marlin Primus, the other deputy involved in the case reportedly followed Legette in a separate vehicle from behind.
