The Mazda3 has remained one of the best received vehicles in Mazda's lineup since its introduction in 2003. Now, a leak reported by Auto Express has revealed that the Japanese automaker is well on its way to finalizing the next-generation 3 for 2014.
In a particularly bizarre "cloak and dagger" move, an unmarked envelope containing print-outs of the Mazda3 photos ended up in Auto Express' office. In an attempt to quell speculations, Mazda UK quickly responded with claims that the images were mere digital renderings used to translate the new Kodo design language to different models and is not meant to represent a real car at all.
Despite denials from Mazda, it's clear that the shapes and proportions point to no other model. Given the leaked photographs, expect Mazda to retain the same 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan range configurations available in the current generation.
Syling-wise, the most prominent feature in the new design is certainly the new shield-grille, which is accentuated with a long chrome trim that extends into the headlights. The design borrows a lot of front fascia influences from the new Mazda6 as well as character line influences from the CX-5. That said, the narrow intake and thread of LED running lights are certainly elements inspired by the Takeri concept.
Poviding the next Mazda3 with a little more sporting aggression that's been missing from the current model, the new 3 features stronger creases and more pronounced wheel arches. The rear also features a floating taillight cluster that evokes a cleaner look.
No doubt, Mazda will continue to refine its SkyActiv technologies for every new model. Expect the new 3 to boast lighter materials and an even more economical engine.
In Europe, the Mazda6 is offered with a 2.2 liter diesel engine with a power output of 148-bhp. Expect Mazda to introduce a detuned version that will pull even better fuel economy figures for the Mazda 3 ahead.
