In just three days, Chevrolet's flagship sports car and, by extension, USA's flagship sports car, will debut Sunday, January 13, for Detroit's North American International Auto Show.
One of the most highly anticipated sports cars for the last couple of months, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette 'C7' has captivated the imagination of Corvette fans as leaked profile diagrams of the 2014 model spread like wildfire across blogs and forums.
In fact, GM scheduled an odd series of leaks as well. The all-new 'LT1' small-block V8 engine was unveiled back in October, revealing a redesigned 6.2 liter V8 engine producing 450-hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque. Unlike the rough and burly V8s of Detroit's past, the latest Corvette engine is rather European, almost Porsche, in philosophy. According to GM, 99.9 percent of the components found in the LT1 engine is new, applying only the latest in lightweight materials to make sure it will be one the lightest and most efficient V8 engines on the market.
Then, in November, Chevrolet worked with Gran Turismo 5 to release a free DLC 2014 Corvette package that allowed gamers to drive the heavily camouflaged Corvette prototype. While a digital road test reveals very little on how a car actually performs, we were keen to find out whether we could actually form some sort of impression anyway with a special Gran Turismo 5 head-to-head comparison that pits the 2014 Corvette 'C7' prototype against the current Corvette Z06. The results were seriously compelling.
Since GM first confirmed the development of the next-generation Vette, it has released a series of trailers that takes fans along the Corvette's "Conception" phase, "Calibration," "and "Craft." Now, the latest and last trailer released by GM ahead of the Corvette's unveiling is "creation," which takes you along the elaborate dance that is the C7s' assembly. Be sure to take a closer look at the new Corvette's aluminum chassis.
In the trailer, body shop launch engineer Jonathan Andrews describes the level of demand neccessary to create the new C7: "Every gram has to earn its way onto the car."
