2013 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix F1

After a dramatic rain storm delayed qualifying after Q1, the teams resumed their business Sunday as teams fitted intermediate tires onto their racing cars. Remarkably, Red Bull Racing has continued to find just enough to keep themselves at the top of the grid. Reigning Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel took pole position once again with a blistering 1 minute 27.407 seconds lap around Melbourne's Albert Park circuit.

Australian teammate Mark Webber closed at the front row in his home track, qualifying less than half a second behind. Next, Lewis Hamilton takes the Mercedes to the sharper end of the grid finishing third right before Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.

"It definitely wasn't easy in those conditions," said Sebastian Vettel. "On the dries (tires) I got in the groove and the car felt in balance."

Taking a daring gamble, McLaren's new racing driver Sergio Perez opted to qualify the second session on slicks but was unable to set a solid time. By third session, pace leaders had all switched to the softer slicks.

Drama from changing weather conditions during qualifying will carry over to the race as well. The top 10 drivers must start the race in the same tires that were used to complete the Q3 qualifying session. However, the super-softs will not like for any more than a handful of laps.

Given the risks of an early pit stop, the grid will likely get thoroughly shuffled in just the first 8 laps alone.
