An 18-year-old boy allegedly killed himself after his father told him that he could not afford to get him enrolled into a hotel management course in Baghajatin, Kolkata, India on Sunday, June 19.
The teen boy, identified as Subhrangshu Mukherjee, reportedly wanted to study hotel management after completing his secondary education. However, Mukherjee's father, who works as an assistant at a doctor’s office, told him that he could not get him admitted to a hotel management course since it was beyond what he could afford. He then asked his son to pursue a general stream course, the Times Of India reported.
However, Mukherjee who was adamant that he wanted to pursue hotel management strongly objected to his father's demand. This led to a heated argument between the father and son. Mukherjee, who felt upset, reportedly then left home to stay at his friend’s place at Baghajatin on Saturday, June 18, without informing his family.
The next day, on Sunday, June 19, he called his mother and told her he was staying with a friend. However, later that night, Mukherjee took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of his friend's residence.
“It was around 12:15 a.m. that we received a call from a hospital in Mukundapur in this regard. The duty officer came to know that the patient had been declared dead at 11:45 p.m.,” an officer said.
“The youngster had been suffering from depression over his studies. On Saturday evening, he left home without informing anyone. On Sunday, he called his mother and told her he was staying with a friend at Baghajatin. The same evening, between 7:30 p.m. and 7:40 p.m., the victim reportedly jumped from the fourth floor of his friend’s house,” said an investigating officer.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 17-year-old girl allegedly killed herself a day before a public examination, fearing that she will fail her mathematics test in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India on Wednesday, May 25, Latin Times reported.
According to the authorities, the minor girl, a first-year student whose name has been withheld from the public, had been upset since the intermediate examinations started.
She had reportedly confided to her parents that she expected herself to fail her mathematics examination due to its difficulty. On Wednesday, May 25, a day before the test, while the girl's parents were at work and the girl was home alone, the teen reportedly took her own life by hanging a noose from the ceiling fan in her room.
Meanwhile, investigating police confirmed that there was no foul play behind the incident and speculated that the suicide may have been related to the girl's math phobia.
